About this service

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual activity. It is one of the most common conditions affecting men, particularly as they get older, yet it remains one of the least talked about. Many men put off seeking help because they find it difficult to raise the subject with their GP  meaning the condition continues to affect their confidence, relationships, and quality of life unnecessarily.

At Priory Pharmacy on Cornlands Road in York, our pharmacist prescribers provide a private, clinically led ED consultation in a discreet and non-judgmental setting. There is no need for a GP referral. Our prescriber will carry out a thorough assessment of your health and, where treatment is clinically appropriate, issue a private prescription for a licensed oral ED medicine such as sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra), tadalafil, or a suitable alternative.

All consultations take place in our private consultation room. Everything discussed is treated in strict confidence. A full clinical assessment  including questions about your cardiovascular health, blood pressure, and current medicines — is an essential part of every appointment.

What to expect

A one-to-one private consultation with our pharmacist prescriber, carried out in our confidential consultation room with no interruptions.

A detailed clinical assessment covering your general and cardiovascular health, any medicines you currently take, and relevant lifestyle factors that may affect treatment suitability.

A clear discussion of the treatment options available to you, including how different medicines work, how they are taken, and what results you can realistically expect.

Where clinically appropriate, a private prescription will be issued for a licensed oral ED medicine on the same day as your consultation.

Important Clinical Information

ED medicines must only be used following a proper clinical assessment. PDE5 inhibitors the class of medicines that includes sildenafil and tadalafil are absolutely contraindicated in men taking nitrate-based medicines such as glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) tablets or spray. Combining these medicines can cause a severe and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure. Men with a recent history of heart attack, stroke, or unstable angina, or those with significantly reduced heart function, should not use these medicines without guidance from a GP or cardiologist. It is also worth noting that ED can sometimes be an early indicator of underlying cardiovascular disease. If you are experiencing symptoms such as chest tightness, breathlessness during physical activity, or an irregular heartbeat alongside ED, we would encourage you to discuss these with your GP before starting treatment. If you experience an erection lasting longer than four hours (known as priapism), stop taking the medication and seek emergency medical attention immediately by calling 999 or going to your nearest A&E. This is a rare but serious complication that requires prompt treatment. Our pharmacist will discuss all of this with you openly during your consultation. If treatment is not appropriate for you, we will advise on the right next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Research suggests that around half of men between the ages of 40 and 70 experience erectile dysfunction to some degree. It is a recognised medical condition and nothing to feel ashamed of.

No. Our pharmacist prescribers are independently qualified to assess and prescribe for ED. You can book directly with Priory Pharmacy without a GP referral or prior consultation.

The main treatments for ED are PDE5 inhibitors, which include sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil, and avanafil. Your pharmacist will explain the differences between these options and discuss which may be most suitable for you based on your health history and preferences.

PDE5 inhibitors have a well-established safety record when prescribed appropriately. They are not suitable for all men  in particular, those taking nitrate medicines, those with certain heart conditions, or those with low blood pressure. Your pharmacist will assess your suitability thoroughly at your appointment.
