When an insect bite becomes infected, prompt treatment can prevent a more significant skin infection from developing. Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, The Priory Pharmacy in York can assess infected insect bites in eligible patients and, where clinically appropriate, prescribe antibiotic treatment without the need for a GP appointment. Our pharmacists are trained in assessing skin infections and distinguishing between those that can be safely managed in a community pharmacy setting and those requiring further medical care.

Adults and children aged 1 year and over presenting with a bite site showing signs of localised infection Those with redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge at an insect bite site suggesting secondary bacterial infection Patients who have not responded to initial simple wound care and hygiene measures
Insect bites can introduce bacteria into the skin, leading to a localised cellulitis or abscess formation. The Pharmacy First service enables our pharmacists to assess the bite and surrounding tissue, applying clinical criteria to determine whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate and safe to initiate under this pathway. Where signs suggest the infection is spreading significantly, is accompanied by systemic features such as fever, or appears to require more intensive management, patients will be referred to their GP or, in urgent cases, directed to emergency services. Our pharmacist will also provide practical wound care advice to support healing.
A clinical assessment of the bite site, including examination of the surrounding skin and any evidence of spreading infection
Application of NHS Pharmacy First criteria to determine whether antibiotic prescription is appropriate
Prescription of the appropriate antibiotic if indicated, or topical and supportive care advice if not
Clear instructions on what to monitor for and when to seek further help if symptoms change
Signs of infection include increasing redness around the bite site, warmth, swelling, pain that worsens rather than improving, and sometimes pus or discharge. A fever or red streaking extending from the bite site are more serious warning signs requiring urgent attention.
Rapidly spreading skin redness, particularly if accompanied by a fever or feeling generally unwell, may indicate a serious soft tissue infection such as cellulitis requiring urgent medical assessment. Please attend an emergency department or call 999 if this is the case.
Yes. The Pharmacy First infected insect bite pathway is available for patients from age 1 upward.
No. Our pharmacist focuses on the clinical appearance of the bite and surrounding tissue rather than the species responsible. However, if you were bitten by a tick, please mention this specifically, as tick bites carry a risk of Lyme disease which requires separate consideration.
If you are concerned about an infected insect bite in York, visit The Priory Pharmacy during our opening hours. Our pharmacist will assess your bite clinically and advise on the most appropriate course of action. If the situation appears urgent or you are unsure, please do not hesitate to call NHS 111 for additional guidance.
Skin infections that are not treated promptly can progress and become significantly more difficult to manage. The Pharmacy First service at The Priory Pharmacy in York allows patients to receive appropriate antibiotic treatment quickly, without the delay of waiting for a GP appointment. Our pharmacists apply clinical judgement to every case and never prescribe antibiotics where they are not indicated, in line with NHS antimicrobial stewardship principles. We aim to provide both effective treatment and clear guidance to support recovery
