The oral cholera vaccine currently available in the UK (Dukoral) provides protection against cholera caused by the most prevalent strain, Vibrio cholerae O1, and also offers some protection against diarrhoea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), which is a common cause of traveller’s diarrhoea. The vaccine is taken as a drink in two doses, separated by one to six weeks, and should ideally be completed at least one week before potential exposure. It is not a replacement for food and water hygiene measures, which remain the primary defence against cholera. A travel health consultation will assess whether this vaccine is appropriate for your particular itinerary.

Assessment of whether the oral cholera vaccine is appropriate given your specific travel risk profile

No. The cholera vaccine is not recommended for all travellers. It is most relevant for those travelling to high-risk settings, working in humanitarian or healthcare roles, or visiting areas with documented outbreaks. A travel health consultation will help determine whether it is indicated for your trip.
The Dukoral oral vaccine is dissolved in water and consumed as a drink. Each dose is taken in this way, separated by one to six weeks. Food and drink should be avoided for one hour before and one hour after each dose.
No. Vaccination provides an additional layer of protection but does not replace safe hygiene practices. Drinking safe water, avoiding ice, and eating thoroughly cooked food remain the most important safeguards.
